I've never been described as Brad Pitt before, and to be honest, I probably never will, but at the moment, I secretly feel like one of the characters he played in the film The Big Short.
If you haven't seen it, it's a film made from the 2010 book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis and it's about the financial crisis of 2007-2008, triggered by the United States housing bubble and subsequent banking crisis. I was in recruitment at the time and I remember the crash like it was yesterday. It was horrible and thousands of people were made redundant with little chance of finding a new job.
In the film, Brad Pitt plays a character called Ben Rickert who was a trader. He had made his fortune and had retired to spend quality time with his family. I'm guessing to watch his wife go wild swimming or chilling out in their caravan or something similar.
Brad Pitt's character was super cool, an expert in his profession, but he was persuaded to come back from retirement.
Shortly after I "retired", I decided to come back into the recruitment industry and start my own business.
I didn't do this to make my fortune (although that would be nice!) but to enjoy the recruitment industry I have loved for 25 years. I genuinely have a passion for finding people a new jobs which will further their career or simply help them secure something stable after going though redundancy. In truth it also gives me a purpose, I enjoyed the challenge and wanted to build something of my own.
Okay, I'm not nothing like Brad Pitt, but I can always dream. I can still watch my wife Louise go wild swimming while I sit in my caravan finding people jobs.
